Cam Oliver & The Sydney Kings To Part Ways: How Has It All Gone Wrong?
Cam Oliver & The Sydney Kings To Part Ways: How Has It All Gone Wrong?
With the NBL25 season in full swing, the conversations around the leagues top award is at the top of the agenda. With the NBL in the best shape it has been in recent history and the talent pool as strong as ever, the NBL MVP trophy could see its closest finish in the history of the award. Who will take the honours and who is starting to pull away in the rankings as the league hits the quarter mark of the season this weekend?
The NBL is a league that has produced plenty of NBA talent and in recent seasons has been a destination league with it's short season, nice weather and the level of exposure it brings for players trying to make the NBA or return there after some time away. This season has been no different with the talent pool this season argueably the strongest it has been in the leagues history. With the NBL25 season head into into Round 7 and hitting the quarter mark of the season, it's time to look and make up our minds on who is in the NBL MVP conversation.
There are so many talented players in the NBL and we can't fit them all into these ranking. Some of the notable absences from the list include Trey Kell III (Illawarra Hawks) who is having a career year in the NBL averaging 16.6 PPG, 3.4 APG and 3.1 RPG whilst leading the Hawks to a record of 5-2. Xavier Cooks (Sydney Kings) is another player who deserves a mention after his impressive start to the season where he is averaging 17.6 PPG, 9 RPG and 4.1 APG. He is a man on a misson this NBL season and is dragging the Sydney Kings to a record of 5-4. There are a number of other names that could be included in this list, but it is now time to get into the Basketball Fix Top 3 NBL25 MVP Rankings.
3: Kristian Doolittle (Perth Wildcats)
Kristian Doolittle is a name that many wouldn't have had in their own NBL MVP rankings at the start of the season but how could you not with how he has started this season. With the injury to Bryce Cotton and a number of other Perth Wildcats players, the responsibilty and pressure has fallen into the hands of Doolittle. The Power Forward is averaging 14.1 PPG, 10.9 RPG, 2.6 APG and 1 SPG whilst helping the Wildcats to a record of 3-4. With those numbers and the fact that he is taking the oppositions best player night in night out whether it is Jaylen Adams or Will Magney, he is a one man wrecking ball currently for the Perth Wildcats.
His overall importance to the team, his defensive capabilities and his leadership qualities to go with his impact make him one of the leagues best players and asserts himself in the converstaion of the leagues best player. With the Wildcats starting to find some health and the team starting to figure it out you can expect more wins and his impact and numbers to increase. This is a major watch this space.
2: Parker Jackson-Cartwright (New Zealand Breakers)
Parker Jackson-Cartwright is a name every NBL fan knows of and that is for good reason. He fits the mould of recent NBL MVP winners such as Bryce Cotton and Jaylen Adams with his small frame, big heart and ability to make big plays and hit big shots. The New Zealand Breakers guard came into this season as one of the favourites to take out the award after an impressive first season in the league where he made the transition effortlessly. He is currently leading the NBL in assists per game and is in the top five for points per game.
His averages sit at 18.7 PPG, 7.8 APG, 4 RPG and 2.3 SPG. He's a man on a mission for this Breakers team as they are starting to find their feet this NBL25 season. His ability to not only play make for this team but score the ball at a high percentage is unlike many other guards in the league. The other end of the court is where he excels, constantly matching up with the opposition teams best guard weather it be Bryce Cotton, Jaylen Adams or Kendric Davis and loves the challenge of it. His heart and passion is a reason he is a fan favourite among NBL fans and he is well and truly deserving of being in this list and at number two on the Basketball Fix NBL25 MVP Rankings.
1: Montrezl Harrell (Adelaide 36ers)
The former NBA Six Man of the Year has been on a mission to get himself back into the NBA but whilst he is down under, there is a chance he goes back home with some silverware. It is crazy to think that a little under two months ago the name Montrezl Harrell and him playing in the NBL would have been a fantasy, but fast forward two months, Harrel has turned the Adelaide 36ers franchise around and has asserted himself as the best player in the NBL. His recent game against the Cairns Taipans showed his class and what he is capable of in the NBL finishing the game with 36 points, 16 rebounds and 5 blocks in a huge comeback win.
His averages on the season are 19 PPG, 10.6 RPG and 1.5 BPG helping the 36ers to a record of 5-3 after starting the season 0-2. He sits in the top 3 for both points and rebounds and is in the top 5 for blocks per game, showing his overall dominance and importance to not only this team but the league. He has been one of the best stories to come out of this season and there are two things that could top off his incredible start to the season, the MVP trophy and a NBL Championship. Time will tell if this is a dream or reality, but all NBL fans can do is sit back and enjoy the ride. He is deserving of this ranking and if this continues, he won't only be a Champion and MVP he will be right back where he deserves, in the NBA.
The NBL is in the best spot it has been since the start of the league and with the talent leading it and contending for this award you can see why. There is still plenty of games in the season to go and as we all know in sports things can change overnight. Who is your NBL MVP though, let us know in the comments below.
