NBL SuperCoach Session | How it went in Round 1 & Strategies for first Double Game Week
Our NBL SuperCoach experts Josh and Jez chat about how it went for their teams at Hoops Fest and what adjustments they are making.
In a growing rivalry now dubbed the ‘Bass Strait Battle,’ Tasmania and Melbourne United face off for the second time in two rounds. Melbourne claimed the first game of the season series and will be looking to make it 2-0 in NBL25 against their Grand Final rivals from last year. Expect another physical, defensive contest, with Melbourne's strong defence and veteran leadership from Matthew Dellavedova aiming to stifle Tasmania's offence once more.
The battle between big men Will Magnay (Tasmania) and Marcus Lee (Melbourne) will be crucial. Magnay had a tough time in the first match, getting into foul trouble, but he’ll look to bounce back. Lee’s ability to neutralise Magnay in the paint could dictate Tasmania’s inside game. On the perimeter, the matchup between Matthew Dellavedova and Milton Doyle will be pivotal, with Dellavedova in top form and Doyle needing to find his range early for Tasmania to stay competitive.
Melbourne United come in with strong momentum, having won their first two games of the season. Dellavedova has been orchestrating the offence with precision, while their defence has been consistently shutting down opponents. With Chris Goulding finding his shooting rhythm in their last game, United’s offence has plenty of firepower. Combined with their tough defence, Melbourne look well-positioned to secure another win.
The JackJumpers will be well-rested after an eight-day break, and with a point to prove after their previous loss, they’ll be eager to even the series. If Magnay can stay out of foul trouble and control the paint, Tasmania's inside game could open up space for their shooters, including Doyle, to make an impact. The potential return of Craig Sword could also provide a needed defensive boost. With better shooting and fewer turnovers, Tasmania can challenge Melbourne’s dominance.
Tasmania shot just 40.8% from the field in their season opener.
Melbourne United have averaged 81.5 points against in their first two matches.
Matthew Dellavedova has averaged 8 assists per game so far in NBL25.
Tasmania will need to improve their offensive rebounding and shooting percentages to keep up with Melbourne’s attack.
In this second meeting of the Bass Strait Battle, Melbourne United have the edge with their solid form, strong defence, and Dellavedova’s leadership. Tasmania will need a much-improved performance, especially inside the paint and in their shooting, to overcome Melbourne. It’s set to be another physical encounter, but Melbourne’s overall game makes them favourites to take a 2-0 lead in this rivalry.
