Beyond the Buzzer | NBL Round 5 Review & NBL Round 6 Preview
The lads chat about the injury troubles heading into NBL round 6 and things also get fiery discussing their NBL25 Power Rankings.
The boys at The Basketball Fix put all biased aside and hand out the best tips and NBL round 6 predictions for each and every game of the weekend.
With no Derek Walton Jr this weekend for the Phoenix after his hamstring injury, all eyes will turn to struggling guard Nathan Sobey as he looks to turn his poor start around. After his good weekend last weekend against Melbourne United, he will look to take plenty of confidence from it, in hopes that it will ignite his fire this season.
The tough question though is how does the Phoenix stop MVP fancy Parker Jackson-Cartwright in this game. The guard is averaging a near double, double with 18 PPG and 8.2 APG, leading the Breakers to a 3-1 start to the season.
With the Breakers being the home team this weekend we can expect them to get off to a good start and continue their current 7 straight home game win streak.
BF Tips: Nathan Sobey For 15+ Points & Parker Jackson-Cartwright For 7+ Assists
In what will be the battle of the NBL offensive powerhouse, it will be interesting to see who can get in their groove the quickest. With the Hawks leading the NBL in points per game with an astounding 101.2 PPG and United in second place with an average of 90.1 PPG, this sets the scene for a high scoring game.
When looking at key matchups in this game, there isn’t a more important player for the Hawks than Trey Kell. With Melbourne United guard Shae Illi out with a calf injury, Kell will have more free range during this game to put his imprint on this game. Expect a massive game from the star guard as he builds his case for the MVP trophy this season.
Whilst the Hawks sit at the top of the ladder, we know what Melbourne can produce and if their offensive end stands up in this game, we could see one of the more exciting and high scoring games this season.
BF Tips: Game Total Over 188.5 Points & Trey Kell For 15+ Points
With the 36ers coming into this game winners in four of their past 5 games and on a current 8 game winning streak at home, they will look to cause the injury ravaged Taipans more heartache. After the signing of Montrezl Harrell for the rest of the season the city of Adelaide will pack out the Adelaide Entertainment Centre to pull their team over the line.
Adelaide with the official signing of Montrezl Harrell have now created one of the more daunting big man combinations in the NBL. With Humphries, Harrell and Martin we can expect plenty of rebounds both on the defensive end of the court and the offensive giving them plenty of second chance opportunities. This will result in plenty of points for one of the league's most efficient teams.
Adelaide will rock up ready to go in front of their adoring home fans and without Taran Armstrong's leadership we can expect a very disappointing Taipans outfit which won’t be able to go with one of the hottest NBL teams.
BF Tips: Adelaide To Win & Adelaide To Score Over 90+ Points
With one of the better rivalries in the NBL igniting this weekend once again at RAC Arena, this sets NBL fans up for a fierce battle. Whilst this might be a physical game though, the Wildcats will be without last season's MVP, Bryce Cotton after he has been ruled out for up to a month with fractured ribs.
With this injury, it will put all the pressure on star guard, Tai Webster who stood up last week for the Wildcats with his 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assist performance. Webster had the best game of the season individually in the team’s loss to the Breakers and will have to replicate that this weekend for the Wildcats to have a chance. Expect some more scoring from him this week as he looks to build on last week’s game.
For the Kings though it will be Derek Ruckers number one player, Xavier Cooks to continue his stellar start to the season. With his near double, double average so far, he will look to continue that against the Wildcats in Perth.
BF Tips: Tai Webster For 15+ Points & Xavier Cooks For A Double Double
This game is what most would call the battle of the birds with the Phoenix taking on the Hawks at home in the Heartland. Whilst these two teams couldn’t be further apart on the ladder, this won’t be an easy blowout win for the Hawks. Don’t get it twisted though, this will be a Hawks win though as they look to possibly extend their record to 7-1 to start the season depending on how they go against Melbourne United.
For the Hawks though, Sam Froling will have his hands full with former Denver Nugget G-League player, Matt Hurt. Froling has the offensive power to match it with Hurt and is a player who is never far away from the double, double mark and will likely be around the money again.
The Hawks shouldn’t have too many problems in this one and this will be another character win for them as they look to establish themselves further as the league's best team.
BF Tips: Illawarra Hawks -5.5 & Sam Froling For 8+ Rebounds
Most at the start of the season wouldn’t have thought that the reigning Champions would start the season 2-5 after the poorest start to a season for the club in their short history. That is exactly what the team has produced though and haven’t looked threatening in many of those games. In doing so though, it has led the door open for the Bullets to maybe walk away winners in this one.
For all the negative comments around this Bullets team, they have started the season with two wins and three losses and are looking like they may be starting to mesh as a team. It’s no surprise though that their wins have come in games where Josh Bannan has played in and led them to. Look for the Banana man Bannan to continue his solid form in this game.
I’m expecting an upset here, on record alone this isn’t an upset, but in terms of where these teams are on the scale of Championship or bust, this will be an upset.
BF Tips: Josh Bannan For 8+ Rebounds & Brisbane Bullets To Win
With a genuine chance that both of these teams will come into this game off of wins earlier in the round, this game will be super important. We all know as NBL fans that early season wins are crucial to have a chance to contend with how small the NBL season is. But in games like this it is always safer to take the home team on your bet-slips.
With much talk and controversy around key player and star import Cam Oliver and the lack of minutes and role, Kings coach Brian Goorjian has expressed his thoughts saying Oliver will get more chances and minutes this round as he played a total of 12 minutes and 37 seconds last weekend. Oliver is one of the league's most damaging and dominating players and will look to kickstart his season in a major way.
The Kings will get across the line here in what will be a high scoring game this weekend. The Kings will give themselves every chance possible to score a huge total as they take the most number of shots per game in the NBL with 76.7 shots per game. It all depends on if they are on, or off as a team.
BF Tips: Game Total Over 174.5 & Cam Oliver For 15+ Points
Cairns will come into this game with plenty of confidence after their win against United three rounds ago at John Cain Arena, where they won 101-88. The Taipans had star guard Taran Armstrong in that contest and he was the game changing player in that matchup that propelled them to the win. With no Armstrong this will mean there will be no win either as Melbourne have been one of the better home teams in the NBL.
Matthew Dellavedova is the player that for me proves the match winner for United. He has been in pretty good form to start the season but has had some off-court experiences with the birth of his second child and having to deal with the challenges that presents a parent and professional athlete. His playmaking ability provides a spark for United and gets all of his teammates going.
This matchup will be one that United would have circled on the calendar as they were embarrassed in this game last time in this same stadium and they will be looking to regain some momentum and confidence against the Cairns Taipans.
BF Tips: Melbourne United -5.5 & Matthew Dellavedova For 8+ Assists
