Montrezl Harrell and Kendric Davis Learn Their Fate: Tribunal Findings and Suspensions

After a delayed tribunal hearing, the NBL’s Tribunal (SMT) has handed down its findings regarding Montrezl Harrell and Kendric Davis. Both players faced serious charges stemming from an on-court altercation and subsequent incidents involving fans.

Harrell’s Penalties

Montrezl Harrell has been suspended for three games and fined a total of $3,685. The SMT upheld the following charges against him:

  • Two charges of striking: $1,550 fine for each offence.

  • Engaging in a melee: $585 fine.

  • Inappropriate grabbing or handling of a spectator: Three-game suspension.

Davis’s Penalties

Kendric Davis, meanwhile, has been suspended for two games after being found guilty of inappropriate grabbing or handling of a spectator.

Is the Punishment Fair?

For the Adelaide 36ers, Harrell’s relatively light suspension may seem like a win. However, questions remain about whether the penalties were too lenient given the circumstances. The NBL appears to be walking a tightrope between enforcing its code of conduct and preserving Harrell’s value to the league. Harrell’s star power undoubtedly attracts fans and revenue, making the SMT’s decisions appear, to some, as an effort to protect its commercial interests.

Critics point to Aron Baynes’s five-game suspension last season for an off-court altercation involving Adam Forde as a benchmark. If throwing an opposition coach warrants five games, shouldn’t incidents involving fans court-side, which tarnish the league’s reputation publicly, result in harsher penalties?

Harrell’s Future in the NBL

The fallout from this incident goes beyond the tribunal’s findings. Harrell has faced racial vilification and feels disrespected by the league’s handling of the situation over the past two weeks. Speculation is growing that he may leave the NBL altogether to return home, a move that would be a significant blow to the league.

Final Thoughts

The SMT’s decision has left the basketball community divided. While some see it as a fair outcome that allows Harrell to return quickly, others view it as a missed opportunity to set a firm precedent against player misconduct involving fans. With tensions still high, all eyes will be on Harrell, Davis, and the NBL as the league navigates the fallout from this controversial incident.
