Illawarra Hawks Poised for Championship Run After Historic Season

The Illawarra Hawks have enjoyed a season to remember, and with their first playoff game fast approaching, General Manager Joe Tertzakian has reflected on their remarkable journey so far.

“The first word that comes to mind is proud,” Tertzakian said, emphasising the collective effort that has propelled the Hawks to new heights this season.

While Illawarra has always been a proud basketball region, this year has seen the club awaken its passionate fan base like never before. Seven home games sold out during the regular season, and their first final against the South East Melbourne Phoenix was no exception, with tickets disappearing in record time. The overwhelming support has not only been a commercial success for the club but has also provided a major boost to the playing group.

“It’s been a definite driver for the team,” Tertzakian explained. “The vibe is unbelievable when we are rocking, and I don’t think there’s a place quite like it.”

A key figure behind Illawarra’s resurgence has been head coach Justin Tatum, who now prepares for the most significant challenge of his coaching career. With the opportunity to guide the Hawks to their second-ever NBL championship, Tatum has left no stone unturned in his pursuit of perfection. His attention to detail, work ethic, and ability to extract the best from his players have been defining traits of Illawarra’s campaign.

His leadership has also resonated with the front office. When asked to describe Tatum as a coach, Tertzakian didn’t hesitate.

“Excellence, accountability, and professionalism,” he said. “I remember a moment when he had to put the hammer down. He just gave the players that look, and they knew straight away—it was time to lock in.”

Tatum’s ability to balance discipline with motivation has been instrumental in the Hawks’ rise to the top. For the first time in franchise history, Illawarra finished the regular season atop the NBL ladder, a testament to the culture and standards instilled by their head coach.

As the Hawks prepare to embark on their finals campaign against the Phoenix on Friday night, confidence is running high. When asked about his expectations for the postseason, Tertzakian’s response was emphatic.

“We will win the whole thing.”

With a historic season in the books, a raucous home crowd behind them, and a determined squad ready for the challenge, Illawarra has every reason to believe that their long-awaited championship dream could soon become a reality.
